Public Policy Work

Chown Dewhurst LLP, international tax advisers, has a long record of service on policy committees and advisory missions in the UK, the EU and elsewhere.

John Chown now spends about half of his time on advising emerging and transitional economies on the taxation of international financial markets, on exchange control and currency issues and on EU accession. He is a Council Member and co-founder of the Institute for Fiscal Studies, and has served on the Taxation and Economic Committee of the Institute of Directors, and the Technical Committee of the Association of Corporate Treasurers.

John Dewhurst is a Council Member, Education Committee Member and past Chairman of the International Tax Sub-Committee of the Chartered Institute of Taxation (United Kingdom) and was for four years their representative on the Fiscal Committee of the Confédération Fiscale Européenne. He now chairs the Institute’s Sub-Committee on European Union Tax Law and Human Rights issues.

We now have a broader team of associates who work with us on specific public policy assignments. They include Jackie Newbury, Dr Oonagh McDonald, Professor Geoffrey Wood and Vesna Vladusic.

The firm is an active member of International Financial Services London, the Centre for the Study of Financial Innovation and various Chambers of Commerce of former communist countries.

John Chown and John Dewhurst have taken an active part in inward and outward visits to a wide range of countries.

As chairman of the Advanced Diploma in International Taxation (CIOT) Sub-committee at the Chartered Institute of Taxation, John Dewhurst is involved in publicising the diploma and promoting it in different parts of the world. For more information see the CIOT website.
