John Chown, founder chairman of JF Chown & Company and now a principal in Chown Dewhurst LLP, was educated at Gordonstoun and Selwyn College, Cambridge (First class honours economics, Adam Smith Prize and Wrenbury Scholarship) and is an Honorary Fellow, and member of the Investment Committee, of the College.
Now in late career, he prefers to work with and help train younger colleagues, notably Binne Vries, relying on his strength at diagnosing client problems and drawing on his years of experience, but leaving someone he trusts to sign off on advice to clients. This often involves liaising with other members of ITSG.
He has been involved in public policy issues in the UK, the CIS the EC and elsewhere, and now devotes about half his professional time to international policy advice. He has been active on City of London Committees and CEE countries and has takein part in many outward missions and inward visits by ministers and others. A co-founder and Executive Committee member of the Institute for Fiscal Studies www.ifs.org.uk, he served on the Taxation and Economic Committee of the Institute of Directors, is a Fellow of the Association of Corporate Treasurers, (former member of their Taxation and Technical Committee) and was for many years on the London Committee of the International Fiscal Association. Business apart, he is on the Committees of the London Handel Society and Cambridge Handel Opea and is Honorary Financial Adviser to the Royal Society of Musicians.
